TRIBUTES PAID TO HOCKEY TEAM STALWARTS JIM & ROS WHO STAND DOWN AFTER YEARS OF DEDICATION TO CHARD TEAM - 🏑🏒

Chard Hockey Club held its first in person AGM since the COVID pandemic this month (14/07). The venue was Chard Cricket Club which the Club used for post match refreshments throughout last season.

Aside from the usual business of reports from committee officers and team captains and appointment of the committee for the forthcoming season, there were two agenda items of particular note. One was the retirement of President Jim Sainsbury (pictured) after 19 years in post and the other was the unanimous approval of Life Honorary Member status for former Chair Ros Clemmans.

Newly elected President Stephen Mahoney paid tribute to Jim and Ros, expressing a feeling of the end of an era, Jim having joined Chard in 1967/68 and Ros having played her first game in 1978/79 season. Beyond playing, Jim has both personally umpired matches for the Club and organised the rota of its umpires. His association with the Club proved to be the start of a family affair with daughter Kate, sons Matt and Paul and grandson Tom also playing hockey for Chard.

Ros racked up over 30 seasons' unbroken appearances for Chard Ladies (see team photo), along with team captaincy responsibilities and various committee roles, none more important than 11 years as Club Chair during which time she oversaw Chard obtain its England Hockey Clubmark accreditation. Stephen described Ros's Honorary Life Membership as richly deserved, pointing out she was in good company as the previous Club member upon whom the honour had been most recently bestowed was Jim.
